I am a member of the Association of Part Time Tutors (APTT). The APTT is a support, training and development group in the UK for part-time teachers in adult, further and higher education. It was started on Tyneside with 2 members in 1995 and has grown to over 300 members, mostly from Tyneside but some are from other parts of the North East and even from further afield. Some of these members are trainee tutors while some are some are retired tutors and of course there are many in between.
Training courses
The training programme is designed, organised, administered and taught by part-timers. For various reasons the courses developed to help tutors just starting out are no longer run but they still offer one day training sessions. These are normally run on a Saturday and are a useful way of ensuring that tutors meet the requirements of continual professional development.
What else does the APTT do?
The APTT has a database that tutors can join to help prospective employers find them. They also circulate details of job opportunities. It is also a good way of keeping in touch in with other people in similar circumstances and sharing experiences. This also means that this is a good cotnact point for anyone looking for a tutor for a specific course.
